Abba, I cannot WAIT to start this new season, this adventure called Sophomore year with You! May You be my Guide, my Leader, my Comfort and Reassurance… may You be my Love this school year. Amen. ❀

NWC, Here I Come! 25 Days Left…

Wow, it feels like this summer has flown by, and yet… and yet I can’t wait for move-in day and classes to start! I know that college will be different and exciting, fun and challenging, and new and stimulating. I know that college will mean growth and I want it to mean maturity and depth in Christ. I have so many expectations for myself in college, and yet I don’t want to hinder what mysterious, exciting things God has in store for me by having too many expectations. My prayer is that I would be open, above all, to what He wants of me, for me, and from me.
As I write lists, shop, and gather everything that I’ll be taking with me physically and mentally, I prepare myself for the things I will be leaving behind physically and relationally. I am a little nervous for what this particular step holds, for this means leaving friends and family behind and stepping out into a place in which I have never previously been. It’s not that I am afraid to make new friends — in fact, quite the opposite — I can’t wait to make some amazing friends, probably some that I’ll keep for the rest of my life!! I am simply beginning to recognize the depth of what I will be leaving here, in distance, though not in spirit.
I am leaving Schaeffer Academy. It isn’t just a school. It’s a beautiful group of people that upholds one another, prays for one another, lives together, shares with one another, teaches one another, and learns from each other. I grew SO much at SA, and not just because I attended Kindergarten through 12th grade there. I learned things from my teachers, in class and through example, that I never expected to learn in a school setting. I made friendships with teachers, peers, younger students, and other adults that I thank God for and I pray that can be sustained even despite the distance.
I am leaving Honors Choirs of SE MN. They have been my choir family for 9 years now; I am so blessed to have been a part of such a dynamic, lively, musical group of people. I learned so much about music and life from the Nelsons, Mr. Strommen-Campbell, Mr. Culloton, and Mr. Johnson. In Honors Choirs I discovered how much I thrive on the life You have given through music, God, and how I might fit into Your creation through music.
I am leaving Autumn Ridge Church, at least for now. Specifically in the youth ministries, we experienced very much change in my time there as a Middle and High Schooler. I began building a strong foundation through Josh Mulvihill’s leadership, grew in His love and grace through Reggie’s guidance, and have been challenged to live out my foundation and growth through Billy and the interns, Brandon, Cameron, and Alli since they’ve been here. Not only did the leadership change in this area, but also in our youth worship ministry. Diane Ackerman stepped down from her many years of guidance and support and Karl Bristol stepped in. Then Karl’s family suddenly grew! And we have now had two of the interns working alongside us. Through these many changes, though, God has taught me so much about perseverance, patience, and grace. Patience isn’t just tolerance, but long-suffering with someone as they grow, struggle, and work through whatever it may be. Patience means loving them through Christ no matter how they treat me or how many times they sin against me. ARC youth have given me a glimpse of what it means to stick together as a body even through struggle and change.
I am leaving Crossroads, my first experience with the music community outside of school and HC. I made some great friends here whose company I will miss dearly. I encountered true Christian community at Crossroads and I will not forget what I learned about integrity, honesty, openness, and friendship.
Jesus dealt with change, too, and He knows how hard it can be. He knew how hard it was to leave those He loved. He knew what it was to start over. He had to leave His Father, in a sense, to come be with us, born as a baby. He had to leave His disciples when He returned to be with His Father. He had to leave Mary and His brothers. He had to leave all others to die alone. BUT He triumphed over death so that we might never be alone. This is my comfort as I leave home to encounter and experience all that God has in store for me. Not only do I know that He has a great plan for me, but I also have the assurance that I will NEVER be alone. He is ALWAYS with me. Always. Now isn’t something to thank Him for and a reason to worship Him!? Jesus, I’m ready!! I’m ready for August 24, 2012!!! πŸ™‚

DR 2012 — July 8th (Journal #10)

This morning we worshipped and had devotions on the beach! It was so magnificent to stand and sit in that magically beautiful landscape and thank You for it. Kiersten led devotion and talked about how we experienced Your joy and celebrated daily what You have done in us together. We reminded one another that though the Β feelings may leave, the trip and Your goodness is still very real and can still be life-changing. Thank You for that reminder!
After devos while the other girls played in the water, I sang some more with Kyle and helped him finish writing a song from the Psalms (and Isaiah). It’s a great song!
Father, grant me rest as we finish this plane ride and get on the next one. Give us all energy and patience as we go through customs in about an hour. Bless the airport employees so that it is swift and easy.

11:30 pm
Wow, you really did bless the airport security and employees! It took literally 5 minutes to go through customs. Thank You!! We finally just boarded our second flight! We were supposed to leave (and return) two hours earlier, but our plane was delayed from Chicago. Grant me rest on this flight, Abba. I probably won’t get home until 3:30. πŸ˜›

*This is the last journal entry I have from my trip to the DR. If you have any questions at all, feel free to ask and I’d love to answer them! In fact, if I get enough questions or involved questions, I will do another post to answer them in further detail. πŸ™‚

DR 2012 — July 7th (Journal #9)

1:25 am
Today was SO beautiful. We left TIME around 10 to come to the resort. When we got here, we found out how neat it is! We can get drinks, all the food we want, swim in the ocean or in a pool, borrow towels, and everything is included! I loved playing in Your picture-perfect creation
I also got my hair braided! πŸ™‚ Only $25, too! They put blue and white beads in and I ended up with 42 braids. How cool is that?! I’m excited.
We met and worshipped on the beach in the starlight tonight. It was SO awesome to be surrounded by Your glory in that way. Then we came back and met in Bob and Marilyn’s room. Marilyn challenged us to share what God’s shout-out to us was this week. If we share these kinds of things out loud, God can use that to hold us accountable.
Each of us has a story to share, and our story can often be the most influential, persuasive way You can bring others to You through us. Remind me of this often and help me to listen to Your voice to know when to tell who and what.
Help me to build a community of believers to truly FELLOWSHIP with at NWC, Abba. No matter where I go there will be hurting people who NEED You desperately. Help me to shine Your light of hope into their lives and to love each person as You call me to love.
Long day of travel home tomorrow!

DR 2012 — July 5th (Journal #7)

10:45 pm
Today we built the whole chapel! πŸ™‚ Wow, that was SO fun. We worked with the Dominicans, laughing and enjoying each others’ company. We only had one injury (besides little scrapes) and that was when the penultimate roof panel started to fall in, causing the last truss to collapse inside the chapel and almost pin Chris, the missionary, underneath it.
When we got back we ate amazing chicken soup Dominican-style. πŸ™‚
Tonight I led devotion. I decided to talk about prayer and communication with God. I explained “praying in color” (drawing my prayers instead of using lots of words) and we each did it individually, sharing the experience afterwards. Many in the group said that it was a wonderful, new way to pray. Thank You, Abba, for reminding me of that and giving me an opportunity to share.
The interns shared their testimonies with us tonight, too. Thank You for the ways You have worked in the lives of Ross, Ashley, Kailey, and Rachel. Father, You have particularly touched me through Rachel and the way we can relate to one another. Bless all of the interns and give each one of them strength and endurance for the rest of the summer here.
We get to sleep in tomorrow, Abba! Thank You for rest, Abba!! Goodnight. ❀

1:45 pm
Church this morning was really fun! I understood much more than I thought I would, considering the Pastor (Noe’s brother) spoke REALLY fast when he got excited. πŸ™‚ They have the congregation bring their offerings and tithes forward during the offertory song. I thought that was really neat and that we should do that! It brings the body together more and shows how supportive the community is.
Lunch was really good and after that I talked with J.J. He tested my Spanish memory verses from Romans and teased me when I messed up. πŸ˜› It’s not like he had any memory verses in English to back himself up, though! πŸ˜‰ It was pretty entertaining, anyway.
Kyle and I are going to write a song! πŸ™‚ In Spanish, hopefully. We’ll see.

10:20 pm
Tonight at ministry in Hatillo I gave my testimony! I even gave it in Spanish. πŸ˜€ Es muy divertido! Kyle and I sang 2 songs in Spanish as a duet, too, instead of our group doing the puppets (this ministry was more geared towards teens, not little kids). That was pretty powerful, and the Dominicans really liked it. I liked that during their worship the words were on the screen this time so that I could sing along! A girl I met named Sylvia really seemed touched tonight. She hugged me afterwards when we said goodbye.
Father, be with those teens. They need You, especially during the summer when they don’t have a lot to do and could get into trouble.
Tomorrow half of our team gets up really early to go do the Foundation! πŸ™‚ Help us to sleep really well!!

SA 2012 — A Memoir

(started May 17, 2012 and finished today)

Thank You, Jesus, for this year,
Thank You for my beloved class.
We have shared our joys and fears.
These nine months have gone too fast!

Kerryn, my dear preschool reject,
You’ve been with me from day one.
God has blessed me more than I could expect;
These years have been such crazy fun!
Alex, bosom buddy, friend,
Thank you for your loyalty.
This year will not be the end
‘Cause we’re both going to NWC!
Sarah, Washington calls to you
and who am I to say something else?
I will definitely miss you, too;
Remember the trip to Wisconsin Dells?
Tabs, you bring life to any group,
especially Philosophy with DanD.
How in the world will I stay in the loop
Without you there to always inform me?
Abbey, pretty Tinker-bell princess,
I love your pens and sticker books.
Vicky, luscious golden locks,
How attractive are your sexy looks!
Kiersten, running motorcycle-fanatic,
Be careful driving in the big, wide world.
And dear Sydney, miss word-smith,
Someday your book I might hold!
Taylor, the sanity in our hurricane,
thank you for your entertainment.
Schwy, whoops, I won’t call you that again,
Though your reaction to me reveals your amusement.
Heather, dear, I always know
That with you I can be crazy and wild.
Steph, my tan cheerleader friend,
I’ll never remember you as boring or mild!
Laura, plant and environment advocate,
Your style never fails to be
New and funky, colorful and cute,
Sometimes fancy, but always unique!

As I come to the end of this poem,
I’m overcome by thankfulness
For knowing you all and loving you much;
Father God, thank You. I’ve been SO blessed!!

Magic of the Heavens

(written June 12, 2012 with editing input by H.L. Snead)

Up above the world I hang,
suspended in the air,
Peeking out the window
at all the colors there:

Checkered fields like calico cats
and floating cotton balls,
wisps of cloud like mermaid’s hair
I see from within these airplane walls.

Winding rivers and county roads
act as serpents and lazy snakes;
herds of hippos, white and soft,
vanish from their fluffy lakes.

Trees are stippled by His hand,
for this is His own magical land!

Reflections: The Rule of Peace

And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful.
~ Colossians 3:15

Hmmm. This is a high calling. It is hard to let peace rule in your heart. As a being-reformed perfectionist, it is difficult for me not to worry about things, even the smallest things. Paul is saying here not just to let peace passively exist within you without any impact, but to let it RULE your heart. Ruling implies authority. It conveys power over that which is under its rule.

It also says to let peace rule in your HEART. The heart is the center of will, the seat of volition. It is where all of our desires are ordered; it is where we determine the organization of our life. The heart involves the power of choice — what we think about, what we say, how we react to others around us. If we let peace rule in our hearts, this means that we let peace be an over-arching determining factor in how we order our life. We let God’s peace control what we think about, what we say, and how we treat other people. If we let His peace rule in our hearts, just think how much less stressful the world would seem. I’m not saying that the circumstances would change; they won’t necessarily, because this world is still fallen. BUT our perspective of the circumstances can change dramatically if we simply let Christ’s peace have control over our lives.

“Be thankful.” Wow, that can be hard. Again, though, if we thank God for the good things AND the hard, painful things, our perspective of the circumstances can transform our attitude and outlook on the situation. Thanksgiving leads to worship, and worship leads to thanksgiving. Both worship and thanksgiving lead to peace. I think a big way to begin letting God’s peace RULE in our hearts is to start thanking God.

So what can you thank God for today? What pleasant things has He blessed you with? What trials has He blessed you with? Both are what we need, even if they are not what we want. How can you begin letting His peace RULE in your heart?

The Best

Here’s another poem from when I was little! I think this one is better than the last one personally.

The Best: to run on freshly tilled soil,
To run and fly on barefooted feet,
It lifts my spirits free of turmoil.
There’s nothing that can quite compare or compete
With the wonderful, free-spirited feeling I get:
Running and Flying and Gliding along.
So I open my eyes and then I let
My joy turn to laughter and my heart burst in song.
And as I run I feel the wind,
Streaming and blowing through my hair.
Even though I step on a pebble, I find
That I don’t even mind or care.
Instead, the birds and sun and sky
Capture my heart and mind and soul.
God’s Creation is everything but a lie:
A truth and beauty to be told.
So as I slow to stop and think,
I notice all the little things:
the cardinals, tulips, blades of grass,
All the blessings that God brings.
And as I breathe the fresh, cool air,
I thank Him for all I’ve been given:
The plants and creatures everywhere,
And I’m just happy to be living.
