NWC, Here I Come!! T-minus 10 HOURS

Wow. I can’t believe this is actually happening. In just under 10 hours I will be at Northwestern, checking in, moving in, and meeting Lauren and Rachel! I can’t tell you how excited I am, but let me explain another strange feeling that has overcome me this evening.
After I was finished packing (by the way, I packed the van all by myself! πŸ™‚ ), I practiced voice (getting ready for auditions!), cut Cody’s nails and brushed him (I ALWAYS do that… now mom will have to do it sometimes :/ ), and got dressed for my Commission Service (more on that in a minute). And when all that was done and I had my first down moment for the day, I didn’t know what to do. My room is emptier than it’s ever been, my books are packed away… I feel out of home. I know that’s not true, but I feel like I’m in limbo or something.
Tonight I was pleasantly surprised when dad got home to be greeted by a smiling dad with flowers for ME! Aaww. ❀ There were roses in the bouquet, my favorite flower! Then we had a very nice dinner which consisted of sweet corn, ribs, and salsa! I LOVE Dad’s salsa. πŸ™‚ We ate our fill; we cleaned that table off for my Commissioning Service, affectionately called Annie’s Commissioning.
My family went around the table, each giving me something and saying a few things about me to encourage me, challenge me, and tell me how much they love me. My mom started off by telling me that she prays I spread as much JOY at NWC as I do everywhere else! And she challenged me to love God and serve others. πŸ™‚ Jenna gave me a poem that she wrote about me last year all typed up. She also gave me the picture she drew (at my request) to commemorate the day I got the inspiration (literally!) for Breathe In Me, a song I wrote this spring.
Reedie was really sweet and made me a digital picture in the shape of a heart using words that describe me, ending with my name (according to him) – Annieboo. πŸ˜› Β It was really cool!! Definitely taking it to college with me. πŸ™‚
Finally, Dad. He said a lot of nice things: stuff I’ve learned, ways I’ve grown, how my parents see me living for God… some pretty sweet things. Sadly I can’t remember a lot of it even though I wish I did. πŸ˜› He gave me a bunch of colored pens, too (well, I HAVE been borrowing his for quite a while… πŸ˜› ). Oh, and he used the peanut M&Ms we were eating as an illustration of the “many M&M’s of the seashore” being the blessings I will receive. He was replicating the Abrahamic covenant – COOL. I feel so loved. ❀ This brings me to describe further the STRANGE feeling I have… such mixed emotions. For the past… oh, at least 3 days, I’ve felt like leaving NOW, like I should be there already because most of my classmates are off at school already. But I realized tonight that I don’t know for sure if I’m ready! I mean, I felt really ready before, but now that it’s becoming real, I think I’m going to really miss my family, Rochester, ARC, Crossroads, Schaeffer, my friends… I’m going to miss what I have come to love. But I won’t stop loving the people, places, and things here, I will just be learning to love a new place, new people who will become wonderful new friends, and new things about this time in life that I’ve never experienced before! God, help me to do what You have planned for me!! I want to do what You want me to do. πŸ™‚
Oh man, NWC, here I COME!!!

NWC, Here I Come! ONE Week Left!!

I only have one week left until I move into my dorm room and start college life. I am SO excited to get there and make new friends, learn lots of music and other stuff, and (most importantly) grow closer to God and learn more about His purpose for me.
I am so enthusiastic to meet my roommates, too! We have bought pretty much everything we’re going to need, though we’ll probably find that we need a few other things too, but we officially get to meet one another a week from today! Lauren and Rachel, I can’t wait to meet you!!
My prayer for this next week, Father, is that You might teach me what You want me to know going into this exciting freshman year. Mold my heart and mind into Your likeness. Shape my motivations, attitude, thought patterns, ALL of me into who You want me to be. Rain Your grace in my life. Whisper Your truth in my heart as I go experience many new things and meet so many new people all at once. Guide me to guard my heart and mind with everything that I have, but at the same time to be open and selfless to showing Your love to others as they need. Thank You for being who You are, God! I am constantly in AWE of all You are and I can’t wait to grow in knowing You and being known by You! May this be a year dedicated to You. I give You this school year, Father. It’s for You! It’s all for You!! ❀
Northwestern, I’m ready!! Boy, am I in for an adventure! πŸ˜€

Colorado — THE Petersen Vacation 2012 (#3)

So I know that it’s been a few days since I updated, but I’m happy to report that our vacation went well and we didn’t end up killing each other! πŸ˜‰ Haha, just kidding, it was a very enjoyable trip overall.

On Friday we drove back through Colorado and Nebraska to Iowa to see family for the last few days. It was wonderful to see Petersen cousins (Kevin & Carrie’s family), Grandma & Grandpa Nelson, and even a few Mossmans by chance on our way home today! (*SIde story: we stopped at Hickory Place for lunch and just so happened to see Melissa & Joel and Kim & Jeff there! What a God-given coincidence!! πŸ™‚ Made me quite happy.)

On Saturday we headed to the Iowa State Fair. I really liked it — a lot better than the MN State Fair. They had a butter cow and butter seven dwarves! They were really cute. πŸ™‚ There were TONS of animals (especially cute baby ones!) in comparison to MN because Iowa is still very agricultural. Who knew?! πŸ˜‰ We had gyros (YUM!) for lunch and yummy ice cream even though it was actually very wonderful, not-too-warm weather! After the State Fair we went to see Kevin & Carrie’s family for the evening.

On Sunday morning we attended Kevin & Carrie’s church, which just bought a school building to meet in recently instead of the coffee shop they used to be renting. I loved worship, the sermon, and hanging out with my cousins, as always!! πŸ˜€ We then went back to Atlantic to have dinner (NOT lunch in Iowa!) at Pizza Ranch with grandma and grandpa Nelson. That evening we celebrated Kyle’s 13th birthday with Kevin & Carrie’s family and extended family! What fun it was to catch up with everyone, play with kittens πŸ™‚ , and enjoy my cousins’ company!

Finally we stopped at the new house Fred & Susan are building to see Fred, Susan, James, and Anna. What a lovely time we shared with them, seeing the house, talking about the upcoming school year, and throwing the frisbee to Kinze. πŸ™‚ Our drive back to good ol’ MN was only 5 hours long, but it felt longer. I am SO happy to be home!

Colorado — THE Petersen Vacation of 2012 (#2)

(Sorry this is kind of a long post because we’ve done a lot in the past two days!)

Yesterday we took it a little easy. I have to say I was a little relieved because I’ve been quite tired during this trip. I don’t sleep well in new places or in the car, thus I haven’t gotten a lot of rest. God blessed me last night with 9 blessed hours, however, and today I had plenty of energy for the fun things that entailed.

Yesterday we went to see Pike’s Peak. I LOVED the drive up as we kept going higher and higher. The drive to the top takes almost an hour, but it seemed to go very quickly because there were so many new views to ooh and ah at. The hairpin turns were a little nerve-wracking, but the views were absolutely spectacular. I couldn’t get enough pictures, though none of them do justice to the great cliffs and depth of the shadows from the clouds. You can see for miles and miles at the top; I can only imagine what early explorers like Lewis and Clark thought of views like that after climbing the treacherous, wearying clefts. At the top it was 52 degrees, so I should have brought my sweatshirt! Silly me; oh well. πŸ™‚ There were SO many rocks at the top, so I guess I know where the Rockies got their name.

When we came down from the mountain we returned to our cabin and chilled for the evening, which I loved. I finished a book that I started the day before and began a new one. I also watched more TV last night than I have all year! Reed, Jenna, and I watched Storage Wars for over an hour before I went to take a shower and read some more. I fell asleep thinking about how God can change me through what I am reading (definitely a good way to doze off!).

This morning we tried to find the Royal Gorge but instead ended up driving in an hour-long circle. πŸ˜› Whoops! At least the scenery was very beautiful! Since we couldn’t find it we turned around and went to Colorado Springs again.
In Colorado Springs today we ate lunch at Chic-fil-A. Then we found the Compassion International USA office and toured there. They have beautiful statues in the lobby depicting their Christ-centered, child-focused mission, as well as showing how Compassion’s work with children can influence a whole community. Then Sean (our tour guide) showed us the history of Compassion and how it all started back in 1952 in South Korea. I knew that Compassion really built up the economic, social, and spiritual stability of South Korea, but I never realized that S. Korea is now a partner country with the USA and 11 other countries to sponsor children themselves! How COOL is that?! Amen, Jesus!!!
All along the walls was artwork done by various sponsored children. When Sean was talking about the 3 programs: child sponsorship, leadership development, and survival, my heart was drawn to the survival program for mothers and their babies (from conception to age 3). Abba, do You want me to sponsor a survival program center??
Then we got to see where they process all of the letters!! That was my favorite part. πŸ˜€ Sean said that over 5 million letters from sponsors are processed each year, and that doesn’t even include the letters from the children! How crazy!! I left postcards for Andrea, Blinzler, and Tumpesia (my sponsored children) there. πŸ™‚ Finally we got to see a replica of a child development center (basically like a small, one-room schoolhouse). They had toys, books, shoes, crayons, hygiene stations, and lost more, though it surprisingly didn’t look crowded. Sean said that each child is put in a group with a few others in their age category (3-5, 6-9, 10-12) with one or two other tutors that give them specifically the attention they need to succeed.
I’m SO glad we got to visit Compassion!!

After leaving Colorado Springs we drove around Denver to Estes Park (which includes Rocky Mountain State Park). Dad was testing my patience because we spent 2 hours driving past all of these different lodges and motels looking for one to stay in, but not stopping at any of them. Weird, I agree, but we finally stopped at one by 8 p.m. and were able to get a little cabin, which is nice. πŸ™‚ We walked downtown to look in little stores and find some food (finally!) before coming back to rest. It’s surprising how tiring traveling can be! But Abba has sustained me, especially through Psalm 23. Amen, LORD Jesus.

DR 2012 — July 8th (Journal #10)

This morning we worshipped and had devotions on the beach! It was so magnificent to stand and sit in that magically beautiful landscape and thank You for it. Kiersten led devotion and talked about how we experienced Your joy and celebrated daily what You have done in us together. We reminded one another that though the Β feelings may leave, the trip and Your goodness is still very real and can still be life-changing. Thank You for that reminder!
After devos while the other girls played in the water, I sang some more with Kyle and helped him finish writing a song from the Psalms (and Isaiah). It’s a great song!
Father, grant me rest as we finish this plane ride and get on the next one. Give us all energy and patience as we go through customs in about an hour. Bless the airport employees so that it is swift and easy.

11:30 pm
Wow, you really did bless the airport security and employees! It took literally 5 minutes to go through customs. Thank You!! We finally just boarded our second flight! We were supposed to leave (and return) two hours earlier, but our plane was delayed from Chicago. Grant me rest on this flight, Abba. I probably won’t get home until 3:30. πŸ˜›

*This is the last journal entry I have from my trip to the DR. If you have any questions at all, feel free to ask and I’d love to answer them! In fact, if I get enough questions or involved questions, I will do another post to answer them in further detail. πŸ™‚

DR 2012 — July 7th (Journal #9)

1:25 am
Today was SO beautiful. We left TIME around 10 to come to the resort. When we got here, we found out how neat it is! We can get drinks, all the food we want, swim in the ocean or in a pool, borrow towels, and everything is included! I loved playing in Your picture-perfect creation
I also got my hair braided! πŸ™‚ Only $25, too! They put blue and white beads in and I ended up with 42 braids. How cool is that?! I’m excited.
We met and worshipped on the beach in the starlight tonight. It was SO awesome to be surrounded by Your glory in that way. Then we came back and met in Bob and Marilyn’s room. Marilyn challenged us to share what God’s shout-out to us was this week. If we share these kinds of things out loud, God can use that to hold us accountable.
Each of us has a story to share, and our story can often be the most influential, persuasive way You can bring others to You through us. Remind me of this often and help me to listen to Your voice to know when to tell who and what.
Help me to build a community of believers to truly FELLOWSHIP with at NWC, Abba. No matter where I go there will be hurting people who NEED You desperately. Help me to shine Your light of hope into their lives and to love each person as You call me to love.
Long day of travel home tomorrow!
